About the Project

Background
The lack of readily available, easily understood information about public and private transportation services has been a deterrent to use of the systems. Navigation within one system can be a challenge, but information has not existed for planning multiple-system trips.

With the advent of automated information systems, individual transit systems (both public and private) are beginning to offer trip planning information to the public via the Internet and telephone customer service lines. Some regions of the country have recently implemented or are developing shared database systems to allow transit trip planning for trips requiring multiple transit providers, and in some cases trip itinerary planning from point to point.

Initial Research
The research effort, completed in 2002, investigated the state of the practice in regional transit information systems and the possible implementation in three case study areas:

  • Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area
  • Laredo area
  • Austin-San Antonio corridor

Researchers provided guidelines for the consideration of the implementation of systems in the three case study areas. The Texas Department of Transportation sponsored the work under Research Project 0-4233: Coordination of Transit Services in Texas. The Texas Transportation Institute conducted the research, working with an advisory committee of transit industry leaders.

One-Stop Transit Information: Guidelines for Development of Regional Transit Information Systems in Texas

Implementation Project
The goal of the implementation project, initiated in April 2003, is to develop a "one-stop" transit information service in a region of Texas. The three phases of this implementation project are listed below:

  • Develop coordination guidelines for an additional area (Killeen-Temple-Waco) and develop formal agreement among transit providers along the I-35 corridor.
  • Develop a request for proposal for a transit trip planning application that will link local transit information with carrier information of intercity services.
  • Select a trip planning application and place it into service in at least one of the case study areas.
